A crazy jerk that just hung up on my mom, that's who!
[WHICH ISN'T REALLY AN ANSWER but what the hell, seriously, what the hell.
But there's something about the look on Yato's face, something tense in his demeanor that distracts Yamato from his bewildered ire. So he doesn't reach forward to try and snatch the phone back, but he does cross his arms, frowning.
He knows Yato. Of course he does--at this moment in time, staring directly at him, or rather, at the hand holding his phone. It takes him another second to dredge up his name, but Yamato doesn't consider that weird--there are lots of people he knows in passing, classmates and coworkers and the like. If he concentrates, he can see hazy memories of casual spars, but that's not unusual either. Plenty of his fellow kendo students can only attend classes irregularly, and even he wears his armor properly inside the dojo walls. Yato would probably look more familiar with his gear on, he assumes--either way, he can recall the guy's name, which is apparently what he wants to hear...?]
[ Yamato answered correctly, but Yato isn't quite satisfied. Something about Yamato's attitude is different from usual. Too slow to bring up Yato's name.
But maybe the individual memories aren't as important. What's important is: ]
[Is that what this is about? A sudden bout of intense insecurity? Not that Yamato doesn't get it, but this sort of approach isn't really an ideal solution, in his opinion.]
Sure, I guess. [He's softened a little, offering an encouraging smile--trying to make Yato feel better, since he's apparently in need of cheering up.] But I'm sure you have plenty of friends, you know? There's no need to rely on somebody like me for that.
[Or hey, maybe Yato really is just a crazy jerk all the time, but... there's something in his face that stirs a feeling in Yamato's chest. Pity, maybe?]
[ "I guess"? "No need to rely on somebody like me for that"? Yato's chin stiffens, grip tightening on the phone. Taken aback. Yamato sounds like he's being put upon by an acquaintance.
His closest friends are supposed to remember the most, and remember quickly. Yato doesn't understand.
Maybe in a different setting...? He thrusts Yamato's phone back at him. ]
[In hindsight, whenever hindsight decides to show up, Yamato is going to feel terrible about this. It's obvious his answer isn't what Yato was looking for, and he can't help feeling a little guilty. His memory is quite good, normally--it isn't often that he forgets a face.]
Okay. [To his credit, he doesn't look away from Yato's face as he takes the phone, doesn't instantly turn around and forget about Yato's presence. He's frowning in that way that means he wants to help, but he doesn't know how. Quite honestly, anything more he says from here is likely to make it worse; on some level, even Yamato knows that.
Still, Yato's clearly unhappy, and that's no good.] Are you sure you don't want to come now? You seem kind of upset.
[ Yato's impulse is to say yes, he's sure. Yamato is probably confused and uncomfortable, and Yato hates being the one to make him feel that way. If Yamato ends up forgetting Yato by the time Yato makes his visit, at least he'll have hit some kind of reset button. He can try again and start off on a stronger foot.
Yato is starting to think about his condition in such a calculating way that it's beginning to worry him. What can he get away with? How can he use this to his advantage? It's only been a couple days, and he's already accepted that this is the way things will be. He's never been the type to wallow for too long in misfortune -- he's always had to keep moving to survive. But in moving forward, he leaves so much behind.
Well, I was actually going to my mom's-- [Which he mostly just says because he has no filter, but he lights up as he says it, like he's just had a brilliant idea.] --oh, you should come with me! She makes really good tea, it'll definitely help you feel better.
[Yato's definitely had Yamato's mother's tea before. He should probably call her back and ask if it's okay, but that would require diverting his attention away from Yato, which Yasusada "fixates on things" Yamato doesn't want to do right now. Yamato's family dealt with him dragging weirdos in off the street from kindergarten onward, okay, this is fine.
It's entirely possible that letting Yamato forget, and then reminding him, would help quite a bit. But it doesn't seem like he's about to let that happen; he grabs Yato's hand and tugs him along, using his other hand to type a quick "I'm coming over!" message to his mother, rather than watching where he's going.]
We're over in Tisse, is that okay? I know it's kind of far, but it's a nice walk, really. [Unless Yamato walks them straight into traffic because he's not paying attention or something]
[ Well okay they're holding hands now I guess. People have been holding his hands a lot lately. But it is a sure way to know that he isn't being forgotten in that given moment, so he'll let Yamato lead him along, not quite side by side because that would look a little too weird -- that is, until it looks like Yamato is about to run into a lamppost, at which point Yato tugs him aside just in time. ]
Eyes front, man. You're a walking disaster.
[ Why is he going to the Yasusada house, anyway...? Wasn't he trying to trigger Yamato's memories at his apartment? Yato asks himself these things but still doesn't protest. Truth be told, he isn't too picky about how he spends his time at the moment, as long as it's with Yasu knowing who he is.
Unless Yamato asks any questions, Yato will be largely silent until they reach the Yasusada house. ]
