"It feels like you've always been beside me. Since a long time ago." At first glance, it's almost cliche--from childhood friends to lovers, with some perceived betrayal thrown in to shake up the story. Kiyomitsu returned to Recolle and the two of them got an apartment together, living perfectly normal lives as college students and friends, and while Yasusada often felt like he had to walk on eggshells around Kiyomitsu (when it came to kendo, anyway), they coexisted very well. Of course, then Retrospec got involved by sending Kiyomitsu a sword, leading to a massive fight that saw both of them splitting up for a full week. Ironically, it was Retrospec that brought them together again as well, in the form of memories of sadness and overwhelming loneliness. Since then, their memories have been so deeply intertwined that it's obvious they'd been together in their past life, too--to the point where, after Kiyomitsu's birthday and his subsequent memory of dying, Yasusada could say without a doubt that he'd waited for Kiyomitsu to come home despite knowing in his heart that he never would. They made a promise to stay and fight together, one which was quickly broken when Retrospec spirited Yasusada away to the jungle for a month--an experience that helped them realize their love ran deeper than that of friends or partners. On top of it all, they now know that they were once sword spirits tasked with fighting the Historical Retrograding Army, and they've since found themselves connected to their swords in this life, too. It's all terribly confusing, but Yasusada isn't afraid, as he knows, with absolute certainty, that the two of them can deal with anything as long as they're together. He often thinks, "Right, this is how it's meant to be."

Soujirou Katsuki
♫
|
"Even though I have this strength... I'll never be useful to anybody..." One of Yasusada's closest friends, second only to Kiyomitsu. When Yasusada was a child and went around challenging the neighborhood kids for fun, he came across Soujirou, and was quickly and thoroughly defeated. But rather than being upset, Yasusada was delighted; he urged Soujirou to come to his dojo and learn kendo with him. Both of them were known for being a little too ruthless and over-the-top when sparring, but they understood each other perfectly, and Yasusada adored him. Yasusada was heartbroken when Soujirou got too sick to practice kendo--both because he didn't want to lose his best partner, and because he knew just how painful it had to be for him. They lost contact for a while, and as each member of his kendo group disappeared from his dojo, Yasusada often found himself missing Soujirou terribly. He was overjoyed to run into him at Kiyomitsu's coffee shop, and even though he understands that Soujirou's body isn't strong enough for it, he can't help quietly hoping that Soujirou will find a way to come back and join them again. For now, though, he's happy just to be reunited with someone who thinks so much like him. Soujirou is someone that Yasusada is comfortable sharing his doubts and fears with, and more importantly, someone that Yasusada is happy to fight with, even if Soujirou's health prevents him from becoming as intense as he once was. He knows Soujirou's own memories haven't been the easiest things to deal with, and he also knows that Soujirou was Kiyomitsu's "master" in their past life, but he does not yet know that he, too, belonged to Soujirou once upon a time. Once he figures it out, though, they'll probably need to have a very long talk.

Baren Kaiyou
♫
|
"We're just living while being hated for being born as ourselves. That's why we're freer than anyone else." "It's complicated" doesn't even begin to cover Yasusada's feelings about Baren. A good friend of Kiyomitsu's, Yasusada's always tolerated Baren's presence in their lives, but Baren loves pressing his buttons and Yasusada's strong reactions have delighted and amused him for pretty much the entire time they've known each other. While Yasusada never seriously claimed to hate him, he has no qualms talking about what an annoying asshole Baren can be, and he hates that Baren can get under his skin so easily whenever he feels like it (which is often). As far as he can tell, Baren never respected his love for kendo, and Yasusada had never seen fit to explain to him why he'd dedicated his life to it. In turn, Yasusada always assumed Baren was an irresponsible, carefree party boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth, the type of person who knew for a fact he could get away with doing whatever he wanted. However, they've always had one thing in common: caring about Kiyomitsu. For all his complaints, Yasusada trusted Baren with Kiyomitsu's well-being, just like Baren trusted him with the same--something they both understood without ever really needing to discuss it. That trust really came into play around Kiyomitsu's birthday, when Baren had been the one to take them out celebrating, and the one to deal with the immediate aftermath of Kiyomitsu remembering his own death the morning after. Though he'd done his part to comfort Kiyomitsu later on, Yasusada maintains that Baren handled things better than he himself would have in the moment, regardless of Baren's denial of this fact. He also had no choice but to hope and trust that Baren was looking out for Kiyomitsu while they were cut off from each other for a month. The texts he received after returning home confirmed that Baren had, indeed, done just that. He also found out that Kiyomitsu had agreed to be Baren's sword, and while he'd initially reacted with anger and jealousy (unsurprisingly), he'd grudgingly accepted their new relationship. Yasusada himself has also agreed to be Baren's sword, and while Kiyomitsu is the biggest reason for it, he isn't the only one. Yasusada's fought with Baren twice now, once as an opponent and once as a comrade, and he can admit they make a good team. Not only that, but as Baren said, Yasusada understands what sort of person Baren is far better than people like Kashuu or Chuuya--while Yasusada certainly has his own biases, he's more capable of viewing Baren objectively than they are. And while Baren is still annoying and Yasusada is still happy to shittalk him to anybody that will listen, Yasusada acknowledges that he isn't a bad person, and that he makes a very good ally in these tumultuous times. The last reason is morbid, but necessary; if Baren ever finds himself in an extremely bad or unsavory situation, Yasusada doesn't want Kiyomitsu to be the one who has to deal with it. He doesn't have to ask to know that Baren feels the same way. Since Yasusada remembers how much he'd adored his very first master, to the point where he'd been willing to abandon everything to follow him, having Baren as a "master" is a jarring change, but he doesn't regret his choice. In the end, it comes down to this: they may not love each other, but they trust each other, and that's all that's important these days.

Yaboku "Yato" Tomioka
♫
|
"I'm not gonna disappear! Not as long as there's someone who... remembers me..." Yet another friend that Yasusada met by running around and beating people up. If only things were still as simple as they once were, back when Yasusada would bring him his spare bokuto so they could spar to their hearts' content. They're close enough friends that Yato texted Yasusada in the middle of the night to share his worries about the more disturbing aspects of his memories, and Yasusada assured him that he was not that person. When Retrospec was spitting out everyone's darkest secrets left and right, Yasusada learned that Yato had once been involved with the yakuza, and at one point they even tracked Yato all the way to Yasusada's home. The two of them managed to fight them off, but then Yato's godly transience kicked in, leading Yasusada to believe for a while that it had simply been a random, albeit bizarre, break-in. Yasusada regained enough of his own spirituality just in time to find out that Yato had been arrested for (by Yato's own admission) failed attempted homicide. Yato plainly stated his intentions of finishing what he started, leaving Yasusada hurt and conflicted over his dear friend's new way of thinking. He never found out what became of Yato's target, since Recolle got overrun with monsters and he'd then gotten dumped in the jungle, and now that he's home, he isn't inclined to ask. Despite everything, he still trusts Yato very much, and he believes his friend is a good person. As he continues to turn back into a sword tsukumogami, it's likely that Yasusada will come to better understand Yato's attitude, but whether his own feelings will change or not remains to be seen.

Chuuya Nakahara
♫
|
"If you were that incompetent, I would have killed you long ago." Though many of Yasusada's friends work at the Inkwell and he himself has gone more than once, Yasusada and Chuuya didn't really talk until recently, when Chuuya reached out to thank him for taking care of Anya while they were away. They got along well right away, by virtue of agreeing that arming a fifteen-year-old idol girl to the teeth is a perfectly valid course of action, and quickly segued into a discussion about deep, philosophical topics, because Yasusada has absolutely no filter and that's the kind of thing he does. Of course, Retrospec then had to intervene, and Yasusada got a misfire from Chuuya talking about his ex; Yasusada proceeded to assure him that it's totally normal and not at all stupid to be hung up on someone for years and years, and then immediately regretted everything he'd just said when he found out Chuuya had been talking about Baren the whole time. Despite agreeing to be Baren's sword, Yasusada can't see his appeal as a boyfriend in any way, and now he does think Chuuya's pretty stupid for falling for somebody like him--but, since he likes Chuuya, he'll still grudgingly support Chuuya's terrible romantic choices. (But seriously Chuuya, love yourself more.)

Anastasia "Anya" Vasiliev
♫
|
"Счастье... ah, that means happiness, I think we’ll be even happier..." Yasusada met Anya by chance at the Founder's Day parade, when she accidentally grabbed his hand instead of her friend's. They ended up going to Yasusada's mother's bistro for a quick meal, and became friends through Anya's bright personality and Yasusada's soft spot for people younger than him. Additionally, Anya is very important to Yato, which means that she's obviously a very important person in general. While they didn't spend too much time together, Yasusada always supported her dreams of becoming an idol, and he attended her debut with a handmade (admittedly pretty ugly) uchiwa and everything. They both ended up getting dumped in the jungle, and Anya was the only person Yasusada already knew--between that and his already-existing protectiveness, he did his best to watch over her. When they stumbled across an armory, he made sure to get a sword for her, and taught her how to use it. She, in turn, taught him a few of her dance moves as they talked about important things, and while he didn't tell her specifically that he's a sword spirit, he won't mind explaining it to her if she finds out. They made it home safely, but they agreed it would be good for her to continue learning her way around a sword, so he still makes time to teach her as often as their schedules allow.

Jirou Hirata
♫
|
"A battle? Alright, after I have a drink!" Jirou is the sort of person that's utterly confusing to Yasusada, but in a good way. Jirou's carefree, easygoing habits border on worrisome, especially considering his constantly inebriated state, and Yasusada can't help worrying about him often. But Jirou's bright attitude does a lot to make even the most serious problems seem easier to bear, and as exasperating as he can be, he's a nice guy and Yasusada is very happy for him and Kenta.

Toshi Inoue
♫
|
"Heh heh. Behold my power!" Toshi is another friend who works at the Inkwell, as well as a friend of Kiyomitsu's. While they aren't super close, Yasusada likes him perfectly well and would happily say he's a very nice guy. Yasusada is very grateful to Toshi for a lot of things, like giving Yato a proper home and teaching him (and Kiyomitsu) what he'd learned about sword maintenance. Toshi wasn't in the jungle with him, but Yasusada also knows he worked hard to help bring everyone back home, even powering through his own injuries, which isn't something Yasusada judges him for. Trying to hide said injuries from Kiyomitsu, on the other hand... sorry, Toshi, you're on your own on that one.

Ryusei Sakamoto
♫
|
"We're both living creatures. We can communicate with our hearts." Yasusada's feelings towards Ryusei are... complicated. Even when they were doing kendo in the dojo together, the two of them tended to clash on occasion, with Yasusada adamant that his teacher's training was the best just as it was, and Ryusei claiming nothing could be won without progress and change. That said, Yasusada always valued Ryusei as an excellent partner--so when Ryusei left the dojo with absolutely no notice, Yasusada was shocked, hurt, and angered. Ryusei had no injuries, nothing to prevent him from continuing on, and he didn't even have the decency to give warning that he was leaving. On top of that Ryusei's said more than once that their kendo group was falling to pieces and that there was no sense in sticking with it, something that hits a nerve with Yasusada every single time. As a result, Yasusada claims he hates Ryusei with a passion, though he won't admit even to himself that his anger stems from his feelings of hurt and abandonment. That said, he's a little disappointed, since Ryusei is no longer in the group of Retrospec users. Fighting with him doesn't bring him any satisfaction when he knows they're leading two totally separate kinds of lives.

Izumi Kaneda
♫
|
"The wrong way can be strengthened through learning the right way. That makes sense." Similar to Ryusei, Yasusada harbors a grudge against Izumi. Though Yasusada was never as close to him as he was to Kashuu, they fought often enough that Yasusada grew very comfortable with Izumi's unique style, and even took the opportunity to learn from him. Izumi's reasons for leaving were perfectly legitimate, but Yasusada couldn't help thinking that Izumi just gave up and quit, rather than trying to pursue school and kendo at the same time. Izumi never got the level of petty jabs and sulking that Yasusada exhibited around Ryusei, but he was still subject to offhand comments and grumbling when they happened to be together. Now, however, Yasusada can't look at him without remembering the Izumi he'd sparred with in his memories, and he can't bring himself to spend much time around Izumi knowing that he isn't even involved in the Retrospec side of things.
